Location: New York City, NY – travel required.

 

General summary/purpose:

Energetic, flexible, and motivated teachers to work full-time with a young adult with autism.  Teachers work on a multi-disciplinary team with specialists in autism, special education, speech-language pathology, fitness, art, and behavior analysis to address communication, academic, daily living, vocational, and leisure skills in home, educational, and community settings in and around New York City.

 

All team members are expected to contribute to program development by working together to create new educational, vocational, and social opportunities for this individual, and for a small group of others with related conditions. The ideal candidate willingly accepts responsibility, takes initiative, can work autonomously, and sees tasks through to completion with creative approaches and a “can do” attitude.  We are looking for dynamic professionals who want to use their time and talent to evolve our organization in collaboration with the team to create and maintain new educational, vocational, and social activities for young adults on the autism spectrum, particularly those at Level 3.  Experience working with learners with autism and/or significant communicative impairments is preferred

 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

Creation and maintenance of educational materials

Creation and implementation of individualized and differentiated lesson plans for learner in particular, but also for 1:1, 1:2, or small group instruction

Assessment of individual learner needs, identification of corresponding measurable goals, and monitoring of learner progress, in order to meet designated goals

Management of behind the scenes details required for teaching designated skills

Record designated behavior data

Implement behavior treatment plans

Monitor learner’s health status at all times (e.g., note irregular food and drink consumption, informally track energy/fatigue level, be aware of medical history, etc.)

Transport learner in Hopkins’ vehicle as needed

Availability to work on a flexible schedule when needed (early mornings/evenings/weekends), not to exceed standard workweek hours

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Speech Pathology, Social Work or related discipline required.

3-years’ experience working with individuals with Level 3 autism

Valid driver’s license required.

Certification in CPR and First Aid required.

Must pass a 5-year driving record verification

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Psychology, Special Education, Speech Pathology, Social Work or related discipline.

Specific training and experience in Special Education Instruction

Experience working with adults with autism in particular

Five or more years of experience working with individuals with Level 3 autism

Knowledge of a variety of educational approaches and instructional strategies

Familiarity with the New York City environment

 

JHU Equivalency Formula:

18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

• During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

• The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
